Outdoors Maternity Photoshoot in Northern Virginia

Not Your Typical Maternity Photoshoot
The best maternity photos convey emotion, achieved through a collaborative process between the photographer and the subject. For your outdoors maternity photoshoot in Northern Virginia, we’ll work together every step of the way from choosing the best locations to portray your family’s story, to picking the most flattering wardrobe, and using prompts to evoke natural interactions and connections.
What Can I Expect At My Outdoor Maternity Photoshoot?
In general, on-location maternity sessions begin approximately 15 minutes before sunrise, or 55 minutes before sunset — it does vary by location, so be sure to check your booked time. We start photography and will move around the property stopping at various spots to capture photos. We’ll get a mix of images including the birthing parent alone, the birthing parent with their spouse or partner if they’re joining us, and then images with siblings if there are any. We may also capture details of the belly if desired. If the birthing parent would like to change outfits half-way through, I provide a small changing tent for their convenience. I aim to keep sessions around 30-40 minutes, but your session may last longer, especially if you’re changing outfits. This length is great for getting a gallery with a variety of images, without keeping the birthing parent out in the heat or cold for too long.
Looking for a more low-key option? In-home maternity photos might be for you.

The best time for a maternity session is around 32-35 weeks. For newborns, it’s best to do the session between 3-15 days of age. I encourage booking at least 4-6 weeks ahead of time to ensure availability and allow time for planning.
Complete your booking by filling out the (digital) paperwork I’ll send you. Your booking is complete and date held when I receive your retainer and signed session agreement. You’ll then receive access to my client closet to start picking out a gown, and we’ll set up a time for your planning call.
During your planning call we’ll go over everyone’s wardrobe, I’ll make recommendations for your location based on the type of images you want, and we’ll chat about hair, makeup, and accessories.
Have your Session!
After your session, you’ll receive a link to your private online gallery. You’ll be able to download your images directly from the gallery. Prints and products are also available – please inquire for pricing.

Maternity sessions are $750 for a weekday session.
To book a session, simply fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page. I’ll get back to you with a few date options, and then to secure your date and booking, you’ll need to sign a photography session agreement and pay the retainer which is equal to 50% of the session fee.
I recommend having maternity sessions around 30-35 weeks of pregnancy. Peak season is April-October, and I recommend booking as early as possible to get your preferred date and ensure sufficient time for planning your session.
With two people and no outfit changes, we can get a full gallery of images with lots of variety in about 30 minutes. If you’d like to add on an outfit change, or if other people will be joining the session, it can last up to 1 hour.
I do rent gowns and dresses for sessions. I found in the past that many clients wanted to wear their own dresses. By offering dress rental as an optional add-on, I was able to lower session fees, and the rental fee covers the costs of steaming, cleaning, and transporting the dresses.
