Outdoor Maternity Photography in Maryland and Northern Virginia
Formal vs Casual Outdoor Maternity Photos:
Outdoor maternity photography sessions can range from casual to formal, or bare belly and boho to super glam. We’ll work together to determine your preferred style, and choose wardrobe and locations accordingly.
Here are some examples of casual vs more formal images. If you’re interested in in-home photography sessions, information about those can be found HERE.
Outdoor Maternity Photography – Locations:
There are many beautiful outdoor locations for editorial style maternity photography sessions in the Washington DC area, including parks in Maryland and Northern Virginia. At booking, we’ll chat about the vision you have for your images, your personal aesthetic, and where you’ll be driving from, and then determine the best location for you based on this information. More information about my preferred locations can be found below, and I’m always happy to scout new locations if you have something else in mind.
Outdoor Pregnancy Photos – Timing:
It’s best to schedule your maternity photography session for around the 32-35 week mark. This will get the fullest belly but still allow a reasonable range of movement and comfort.
The best lighting for photographs is around sunrise and sunset. I do offer sessions at other times of day depending on the circumstances and location, but my recommendation is to schedule as close to sunrise or sunset as possible
Exact times will vary depending on time of year and daylight savings, but will typically mean a start time around either 6:00am or 6:30pm during summer, or 7:30am or 3:00pm during winter.
Booking and Availability:
Maternity photography sessions should take place around the 30-35 week mark.
These sessions are some of my most popular bookings and they book out several months in advance. Most women contact me for booking around their 20th week of pregnancy.

My Preferred Locations:
During your consult call, I’ll gather some information about where you’ll be coming from, the type of images you’d like (i.e. casual vs formal) and the type of day you’ll want your session (sunrise vs sunset) — I’ll then use that information to recommend the best location for your session.
Once we’ve agreed on a location, I’ll send you all the info you’ll need including where at the location we’ll meet, what the restroom and parking situation is, and any special items you’ll need to bring with you (i.e. blanket or mosquito repellent.)
The below list includes a handful of my “preferred locations” which means the photography permit fee is included in your session fee, they have free parking, and access to clean restroom facilities during some/most hours.
1. Maternity Photographs With Stone Archways, Formal Garden, and Sweeping Staircases on the Grounds of a Historic Mansion
Located approximately 40 minutes outside Downtown Washington DC. This location has lots of variety with formal gardens, large stone staircases, stone archways, a large field, and front lawn.
2. Lake-Front Park With Scenic Variety
Located approximately 30 minutes from Downtown Washington DC. Some highlights from this location include: Sunshine peeking through trees, a shady lakefront spot, and a perfectly framed lake reflection.
3. A Second Lake-Front Park with Scenic Variety
Located approximately 30 minutes from Downtown Washington DC. Some favorite backdrops within this location include: a bridge, small playground, picnic area, trails, and of course, the lake.
4. Pregnancy Photos in a Creek at a Park With Walking Trails and Forested Areas
Located approximately 10 minutes from Downtown Washington DC. Options include wading in ankle-deep water, posing on a fallen tree, and photos on a small footbridge.
Due to weekend road closures, this location is only available for weekday sessions.
5. Small Rustic Garden
Located approximately 30 minutes outside Downtown Washington DC. This location has less variety than the lakefront option, but is good for families with younger children since it’s smaller with less walking.
My example images for this location are non-pregnant families, but this location would work just as well for maternity sessions with young children!
