Taking photos of your newborn outdoors in the winter may seem like a daunting task, but the resulting images can be so rewarding!
Here are some ways we combat the winter cold to get you unique outdoor winter newborn images.
1) Flexibility of scheduling. Once you let me know baby has arrived, we’ll check the weather reports and pick the date with the best weather. If things change suddenly (as they frequently do in winter) we’ll have a little bit of wiggle room to adjust our plans.
The below photos were taken in mid winter on a 45º day wedged between several <30º days.
2) Blankets, head coverings, and layers. As an added bonus, these items create rich textures, giving your images more depth.
The below photos were taken in approx 35º weather in mid-winter.
3) A shorter photography session. For outdoor newborn sessions, we’ll likely stay in one spot for all or almost all of the session. Since many of the images are focused on baby details, we won’t need to move around the location as much. This means you’ll have a gallery of images with a ton of variety, in significantly less time than a session where we’re moving around more (typically in about 30 minutes time.)
The below photos were taken in early spring in approx 45º weather.
4) Breaks for warming. As an additional option, we can plan to have your session with easy access to either your home or car for brief warming breaks. Backyard sessions are a great option for families who want to have access to their homes, and we don’t need a lot of space or any fancy landscaping to get great photos (most of the focus is on baby and baby’s details.) You can see examples from backyard photoshoots here.
